The Stillness Within
The importance of introspection.

I put a lot of value in introspection.

I’ve learned that typically, whenever I have a problem with something or someone in my life, the problem can always be solved by introspection, a total evaluation of self.

Introspection is how I find peace in this chaotic world.

Granted, this is a pretty recent value for me. It’s much easier to blame external sources for the problems we face in life, and in the past, I have not always been the best at taking a good, long look at myself and accepting my part in the creation of chaos. I’ve been guilty of denying my true feelings, my true self, and of running away from my problems rather than try to solve them. Or of trying to solve only the surface problems instead of addressing the real problem.

Introspection is scary.

But it’s also necessary.

It’s the only way we can truly move on from the troubling situations, experiences, and people who only bring chaos into our lives. And yes, chaos is a natural part of life, but it shouldn’t be a permanent part. Everything is temporary. We shouldn’t be facing one barrage of chaos and drama after another. If we have more chaos than peace in our lives, we are in denial about something.

Peace comes with acceptance. Acceptance of all we are, where we are, as we are. And how can we find that acceptance if we never take the time to truly get to know ourselves?

Get to know yourself, really. Know that you are more than the circumstances you are facing, more than anything that can be seen on the outside, more than can be measured on the inside. You are more than a checklist of qualities, more than what you’ve been through, more than you could ever accomplish. If you took away your name, your age, your occupation, everything you typically define yourself as, who would you be? You. Find you.

There are many different ways to do this. Try whichever one works for you, whichever one gets you to finally see yourself, every part of yourself, all your hopes, dreams, quirks, and emotions. Find the peace and stillness that is patiently waiting for you within. You already have inside you everything you will ever need to succeed in this life. You just have to take the time to look.

Maybe it won’t be pretty at first. Maybe it will take every ounce of courage for you to really look inside yourself.

But it will be worth it, I promise.

Find the stillness within.
