5 Ways to Be a Good Friend
Be a friend who’s hard to let go.

Friendships change. People grow, and often grow apart. The people we were once close to, the people we once told everything to, won’t be in our lives forever.

However, there are some behaviors that can make a friendship last. While the friendships may change, the behaviors that make a good friendship don’t.

  1. Show up.
When you say you’re going to be somewhere, be there. Show up on time. Don’t make your friends waste their time waiting for you, and don’t flake at the last minute. Just show up. This should also be taken metaphorically as well: show up for your friends emotionally. Be supportive. Be active and involved in the lives of your friends. SHOW UP.

2. Remember birthdays.
Even if they claim to not be “birthday people.” Everyone wants and deserves to be celebrated. Celebrate your friends. Let them know the day they arrived on this  planet matters.

3. Tell the truth.
Even if it’s uncomfortable. Even if it hurts. Value your friends enough to be honest with them no matter what. Remember there’s a difference between telling the truth and being blunt. The truth takes other’s feelings into consideration and being blunt does not. Choose the truth. Tell the truth.

4. Listen.
Be present in every conversation. Don’t just wait for your chance to respond. Honestly listen and pay attention. It will come in handy when you’re gift shopping, and will signify to your friend that you truly care.

5. Love.
Love your friends. Accept them for who they are. Don’t try to change them, complain about them, or use them. Love them unconditionally. Know that they will never be perfect and neither will you. Love them anyway. Because in the end, the only thing that’s going to matter is who you loved, how you loved, and who loved you back.

It doesn’t take a lot to be a good friend. Friendship shouldn’t feel like a chore. It should be something you’re happy to give your time and energy to. If it isn’t, it’s probably time to make some new friends.

We all deserve good friends, but most importantly, we should all try to be good friends.
