Christmas 2014

Every year for the past ten years, my dad's side of the family celebrates the holidays by having me write a poem that my cousin will then read to the entire family. It's become a family tradition.

I was once told it was quite the miracle to see

The whole Mathys family celebrate Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.

This family’s not perfect, but it’s never claimed to be.

But in my heart it’s always seemed rather perfect to me.

We talk, we laugh, and when we feel like it, we listen

But most importantly we love each other without condition.

Every one of us makes mistakes year after year,

But not one single person will find any judgement passed here.

Of course, if you’re not a fan of the Cowboys or Longhorns, we’ll hate you,

and those who don’t hunt, fish, or share opinions might find some trouble here too

But the love of a Mathys is strong and runs deep.

For those who share blood, our forgiveness is cheap.

With open arms, open hearts, and open minds,

we accept all our flaws, troubles, and crimes.

None of us is perfect, but look around and you’ll see

Nothing could be greater than this family, together, on Christmas Eve.

Merry Christmas, ya’ll!
