To Write the Unknown
Sometimes it’s a struggle.

I’ve been staring at this blank page for over two hours now.

I don’t know what to write.

Some days, I can show up to the page with a clear idea on what to write or at least have a general topic in mind I can write about. Often, on such days, I can start off writing one thing and end up with three variations of the same story. I like those days.

Today is not one of them.

Today, I’m struck with the desire to work on what I call my “real” writing. I’ve had this novel idea for a couple years now that I’m finally starting to put into words. I’ve been working on it sporadically for the past couple of weeks, and have the first chapter already written. I would be expanding on it right now if I wasn’t stuck trying to figure out what to write here.

Because this here is just as real as my “real” writing. Everything on this page matters, at least to me. I want everything I write to count.

And that’s why I struggle. How do I make the writing count when I don’t know what to write?

I forget sometimes that the unknown is just as important as all the knowledge in the world. Maybe even more so. There certainly seems to be more unknowns than knowns in the world.

So I don’t have a topic to write about today. I don’t have a story to share here.

But I will.

And that’s all that truly matters.
