Letter for a Motivating Spirit

Dear J.,

Someone close to me once told me that life didn’t have to be complicated and messy, that it was actually quite simple and a matter of choice. But I didn’t believe that until you showed me how.

You have challenged every belief of mine since the day we met. You have motivated me and everyone around you to become the complete and best versions of themselves. Because of you there is hope, and light at the end of every dark tunnel. You don’t only believe in the ones you love, but you show them how to believe in themselves too. You are truly a motivating spirit.

It has been incredible this past year to see myself grow and evolve, to see my beliefs and insecurities challenged and dismissed in the best ways possible. And you are one of the greatest motivations for this evolution. I’ll never forget how, after my overdramatic display of negativity toward my writing, you picked my story out of the trash where I threw it, read it, and gave me no choice except to believe in it.

I never had a lot of people who believed in me, and though it’s no excuse, I used it as one to explain why I didn’t believe in myself. But since you have become a part of my life, that’s no longer an option. And because of you, I have faith where I never did before. I’m stronger than I was because of you. That’s the affect you have on people.

If the goal of life is to make it a better place, you’re the one who makes the accomplishment look easy. There’s no doubt in my mind you’re going to change the world, the way people think and react, the way people live their lives. You already do. You don’t have a problem standing in the spotlight to defend what you believe in, and that courage is the kind that makes anything possible. Especially radical change.

But beyond the competiviness, challenges, and the strong-willed fighting, you are still one of the most genuine, compassionate, and considerate people I know. You’re respectful, honest, and incredibly kind. You step in to help those in need without hesitation, you love without judgement, and you give without expecting anything in return. You’re impossible to put in a box or category. You create your own life, and your own definition of it. But you’re not a hostile or reckless anti-conformist. You just live your life. Simply. Without complications and mess.

And you motivate everyone around you to do the same.

I love our discussions. I love the challenges you’ve presented me with. I love the changes you have inspired and encouraged. I love the calming yet purposeful environment you create wherever you go. And I most certaintly love you for everything you are. I’m grateful for everything you have taught me. Your friendship has been a neccessary and wonderful addition to my life, and I can’t image where or who I would be without you. I look forward to continuing to grow with you and because of you. And if our paths in life ever take us in different directions, know that I’ll never forget that I wouldn’t have much of a path if it weren’t for you. As the song goes, I was blind, but now I see. And you’re the one who opened my eyes. Thank you for that. Thank you for everything.

With love,

Kayla
