Letter to a Gypsy Soul

Dear E.,

My first day of the seventh grade, I was terrified. Not only was I at a new school in a new city, I was also entering public school for the first time in two years. But then I met you in my fifth period journalism class, and over a bottle of neon orange nail polish, you became my first friend. And just like that, I didn’t have to be afraid anymore.

You showed me how to be fearless. You showed me how to take life by the balls, and literally live instead of just existing. You showed me how to ask questions, the kind of questions that challenged my soul, and made me wake up to my own reality. You showed me how to dream, really dream, but mostly, you showed me how to DO. You don’t sit back and let life happen to you. You live. And in doing so, you inspire me to do the same. To take action, and participate in this crazy game of life instead of only being a spectator.

You are one of the most fearless people I know, and not because you’re never afraid. You’re fearless because you understand what truly matters in life. You don’t settle. You don’t shrink into a simple existence. You take the complications, and obstacles, and you own them. You aren’t afraid to bend the rules or even break them if that’s what your heart tells you to do.

And I truly love that about you. I love your strength. I love your persistence. I love your gypsy soul, the kind of soul that doesn’t follow the crowd. The kind of soul that is true.

I know we’re not as close as we once were. Our lives have taken us in different directions several times, but we always reconnect. And when we do, it always feels like no time has passed at all. Your soul is familiar to me. It always has been. Perhaps we were sisters in a past life. It certainly seems like it!

I want you to know that I will always be here for you. I love you, and I am abundantly grateful to know you. You are a part of my soul family, and I can’t wait to see all that life has in store for you. I just know you’re going to conquer something phenomenal! You’re much too extraordinary not to.

With love,

Kayla
