Letter for a Rare Heart

Dear Z.,

Perhaps it’s because I grew up in a town and a household where the word Rebel was a symbol for strength, power, and victory, but for as long as I can remember, I’ve had a rebellious side that I take great pride in. And you were one of the first people I can remember sharing my rebellious side with.

Our friendship developed during the years I spent homeschooled. Your rebellious side meant you were often absent from school at the same time I was, and while the rest of the world was busy at work or school, you and I spent our time together fighting against the expectations of society. You were the one who taught me how to ride a skateboard, and how to light a match so we could burn our sisters’ Barbie dolls. With you I felt I could conquer the world. With you, I felt understood.

You were a few years older than me, but that’s not why I looked up to you. You always seemed invincible to me, and I envied your unwavering strength. As I’ve grown, I realize there are not a lot of people in this world who can stand up for what they believe in, stand up for themselves, or others and not be hardened by the fight. And that makes me feel lucky to know you because that’s exactly the kind of person you are. You are a fighter, but you’re also a genuine lover. You have a strong and soft heart at the same time, and that is a rare and beautiful thing to possess.

I hope you know how extraordinary you are. You have the power to revolutionize the world, and I hope you use it.

Thank you for being my partner in crime. I’m so glad you were a part of my life and childhood memories!

With love,

Kayla
