Stronger Together

Last night, my family “celebrated” the first anniversary of my grandfather’s death.

I was expecting the night to be filled with lots of tears, and hugs, and reminiscing of what we’ve lost. While this wouldn’t have been a bad thing, it certainly would have been emotionally draining, and I was prepared to spend today recovering from the reopened wounds of grief.

But that’s not what happened.

Instead of revisiting the painful parts of our loss, as a family we celebrated the strength of our community. There was much more laugher than tears, and still plenty of hugs. And instead of reminiscing on the loss, we counted our gains, and enthused about our latest successes.

We all went to bed last night with our hearts and bellies full, and woke up this morning feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.

It was a tragedy to lose such an important member of our family, and for each of us, the weight of this loss has felt unbearable at times. But we don’t have to carry it alone. Together, we share the load so it doesn’t weigh us down.

Together, we are strong.
