Catching Smoke: Ch. 48

Shit, Emmalee thinks. How did he find me already?

She can’t believe it. She only arrived at the gas station a few minutes ago. She’s barely had time to convince the clerk of the story she came up with…or figure out what city she’s in.

“Senorita?” The clerk gives her a sympathetic look, his calloused fingers stroking her back.

Emmalee burrows her face in the clerks dirty, flannel shirt and fake-sobs.

“I just don’t know what to do,” she says. “Please, help me!”

“Si, si,” the clerk says. “I help you. Make phone call?”

Emmalee lifts her head, and peeks out the window. Colin stares right back at her, his eyes narrowed into a glare.

“No,” she says. “No, phone call.”

What is he waiting for? she thinks. Why is he just standing there staring at me? What is going on?

Colin shakes his head at her, presses a finger to his lips, and then slides into his car. She hears the engine roar to life, and then Colin is driving away.

Leaving her behind to figure out what comes next.
