Redemptive: Ch. 4

Sunday, June 23, 2019

The next morning, I woke up to the blinding sunlight shining through my window, and the angry scowl of my mother peering over me.

I sat up, and looked beside me where Ty was still sleeping. Though my parents didn’t mind Ty staying the night every once in a while, they preferred he sleep in the guest room down the hall.

However, I hadn’t been expecting them back so early this morning.

“You’re going to be late,” my mother said. Then, nodding toward Ty, she added, “We’ll discuss this later.”

She swiveled on her heels, and walked out of the room, leaving the door open behind her. I exhaled. I had been more worried that the frown on her face as well as her early arrival meant that she had somehow heard about the party last night.

I looked at the clock on the bedside table, and gasped when I realized there was only an hour left before school started. Ty was already ten minutes late to practice.

“Ty, wake up!” I said, nudging Ty awake. “You’re late!”

I shook him a few more times before he finally stretched his arms over his head, and let out a groan. When he sat up and saw the time for himself, he cursed and frantically jumped out of bed, pulling on his clothes that were strewn on the floor.

I cringed at the sight. I could only image the conversation I’d be having with my mother later.

“I’ll see you at school, babe,” Ty said, giving my lips a quick kiss.

“I love you,” I said.

“I love you more!” Ty called over his shoulder as he ran down the stairs.

I jumped in the shower, ran a brush through my hair, and dabbed concealer under my green-blue eyes to hide the dark circles from the sleepless night before. I swiped a coat of pink gloss over my Jolie-esque lips, and with one minute to spare, slipped on my favorite polka-dot dress with a plunging back.

Taking my bookbag, and making sure I had everything I needed for the day, I grabbed my keys and headed downstairs to leave. My parents were already gone, probably off to shoot their next special, so I managed to leave the house without a lecture.

I drove to school in silence, and arrived just in time to snag a quick meal from the cafeteria and join my usual crowd at our favorite courtyard table.

“There you are,” Chelsea said when I took my seat. “And I thought I was the late one. Too much fun last night?”

“Are you talking about you or me?” I asked, and Chelsea glared at me mockingly.

“I wouldn’t know, actually. My last memory was being naked in the guest bed with Ike, and then I woke up naked in his bed this morning, but everything between the then and there is a blur.”

“Why doesn't that surprise me?”

Chelsea nudged me in the ribs with her elbow, and we both laughed.

“How was your night?” Chelsea asked, but I wasn’t paying attention.

Zeke had just arrived in the courtyard, his head down and his hands gripping the straps of his oversized backpack.

I remembered last night immediately with a giant blob of guilt twisting in my gut. I wanted to help him now, but there was still a chance (however slim) that Ike would behave himself after talking with Ty, and I wanted to give him that chance.

“Hello? Earth to Cami?” Chelsea said, waving her hand in front of my face.

I swatted her hand away, and glared at her. “What?

“How was your night?”

“Fine.”

“Fine? That’s it?”

“No, fine as in it’s none of your business.”

“Yikes. Is Aunt Flow in town? Because according to our calendar that would mean you’re a week early this month.”

“I’m not on my period, Chelsea. I just didn’t sleep well.”

“And? Did Ty have a case of the whiskey d?”

“Ew, no. We spent most of the night cleaning.”

“Uh huh. Well, it sounds like you should have spent most of the night cleaning something else...” She mimes a blow job, moving her open fist back and forth in front of her mouth.

“Ew. Chelsea, stop.” I swat at her lewd gesture, rolling my eyes.

“Well then cheer up, buttercup!”

The bell rang then, and I immediately jumped up, glad for the break from our conversation. Seeing Zeke reminded me that I still needed to work out the details of my plan.

Unfortunately, that would have to wait.
